Great video! I think another effective means to ensure a student cannot claim that they didn’t hear you is to include written instructions on the chalkboard/smart board so they can quickly refer to the expectations you have of them, permitted they can read and are not very young students.

Good reminders! I'm a 1st-year ESL teacher who's still in the process of improving my classroom management skills. My one success has been in relationship-building and doing a lot of that 'informal chit-chat' w/ the kids. Even my most challenging kids respond well to this. When kids know you genuinely care about them, they are more likely to respect you and work harder for you.

The more u know the students, the easier to settle them down. For example, starting a conversation about last night's football game, or having watched a movie the day before.. Great video!

When I first starting teaching 6 years ago. I also used my volume to get class control. To all teachers out there. Reality is adults are harder to understand and thus harder to control. Students/children are easier to understand. It doesn't take much to find the routes of a students issues. If you are willing to be obersvative and patient. Mr. Rob you need to first understand adults and that is why you struggle as a teacher. It is a common misunderstanding with teachers. Also alot of people become teachers for the wrong reason. If you're not a suitably good person who can control his or her temper/anger and you find it difficult to analyze and understand people. Of course you will struggle as a teacher. Being able to evaluate people helps you understand them. Once you can put yourself in their shoes and see things from their perspective, you can better manipulate their behavior in the direction you want. Yes, i said manipulate. Get over it. The reality is as a teacher your true goal is to improve your students in any way and all ways. If you can't steer them in the right direction, you've failed. No matter how disruptive, lost, or confused they are. It is crucial to evaluate and understand. Mr. Rob you should take some time out of teaching. Follow less rigorous control and become more of a people person. To all teachers in fact, if you find you're not really a people person and people generally dislike you or find it difficult to relate to you. Its probably best you find another last resort as a career. I notice a lot of teachers become teachers because they failed at the other things. Hence, their inability to take it seriously, be passionate and professional. In the end its probably the simplest and most enjoyable job there is. You've just got to smile and remember what it was like to be their age. From there classroom management is a matter of assessing and curbing the path to a productive and fun one. Good luck

How about bringing back a school culture & solid leadership in schools from the principals again? It truly starts there where the vision of leadership and parent outreach begins before the teacher even enters.

Currently student-teaching and it's so hard to calm the noisy students down and retain their attention (they aren't bad, just wild at times, as young kids are), especially because my voice is so soft. I refuse to yell, so I try repeating my directions as loud as I can ("you should be looking at me, you should be look at me, you should be looking" until everyone is looking at me.) It seems silly repeating something so many times, but it works for me for now.
